Staches Save Lives and 80s Bands Don't

Now this may not be the most unique Stache I've ever come across, but slap on an 80s rockstar wig and a good cause and I'm game.

At 28, Travis Frink (another Huntington Beach-er) was probably a little too young to really get into the glam/hair bands of the 80s. BUT nowadays, he is totally pulling off a tribute to the hair band look plus a Stache. And Travis did it to raise money with his company Quiksilver for the Movember cause that helps fight prostate cancer (see below). That's way more style and contribution than 80s ultra-glam rockbands like . . . Poison. First, the Poison bandmembers look like they can't even grow a Stache. And second, their only (semi) worthy contribution to this world is "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." And seriously, what kind of contribution is that?

Moral of the story: Staches Save Lives. (and 80s Bands Don't)

More about Movember: Come the 11th month of every year, Movember begins and guys all over the world start growing out their Mo (Aussie word for mustache). The Movember charity event began in Australia (hence the "Mo"), then spread worldwide, to encourage guys to grow out their Stache during November to raise money and awareness for the fight against prostate cancer. And spreading the Movember word definitely happens considering guys with Staches encounter a Stache-curious person almost daily, allowing them to tell their Stache story time and again.

The Staches Heard Round the World

On May 23, 2009 the World Beard and Moustache Championships are happening. Basically a bunch of old and young guys from all over the world meet up, twist their Staches in fancy ways, and march around hoping to be the chosen ones. It's in Anchorage, Alaska this year which, apparently, is a big deal because this marks the second time the championships have been in the U.S. in the championships ENTIRE history!! With that said, it is worth it to at least visit the championship site to check out the crazy Staches some past contestants have had.

Like this guy who is a former self-proclaimed "Pizza Delivery Professional" (aka delivery boy) named Burke Kenny who won in 2007 in one category.

There's a fee to enter or attend and you have to pay for travel arrangements, but hey! you get to be in the presence of "the world's bearded and moustached elite!" As far as I can see on the Web site, the winners only get an award and not a prize making Alaska a pretty far commute for a trophy. But then I thought: Being known as the guy with the sweetest Stache in the world is priceless and you can't put that in a box and wrap it. The legend of the winner's upper-lip hair will live on forever.

Check out some of the category samples. Awesome.

Do a Popsicle and a Stache Mix?

Apparently, the answer is yes. A popsicle and a Stache definitely do mix. The proof is right here:

This is Ryan Kennedy of Costa Mesa, CA (I am now even prouder to say it is my hometown). He claims the age of his Stache (currently 13 months old) and has said it "is about to start eating solid foods all by itself. I expect a first word soon as well.” And I believe it.

At 24, he is the epitome of owning an enviable Stache while being every mother's worst nightmare (man with Stache ordering from an ice cream truck). But moms need not to worry, he's proud of his Stache, likes Ninja Turtle popsicles, but leaves the kids alone. Instead he focuses his Stacheness elsewhere like entering in the World Beard and Moustache Championships (more about the competition in an upcoming post). He's running this year and has a pretty good shot unless other Respect the Stache guys enter, then it could be a toss up. Good luck Ryan!!!

Disclaimer: Even though Ryan is a Stache inspiration, he was not the inspiration behind the Respect the Stache logo. However, the similarity of Stache form is uncanny.

Old School Steezy Stache

When I think of Huntington Beach, CA I don't think of guys who are willing to stand out in the way they look. This isn't necessarily a bad thing since HB just has a fun surf/beach culture that people love to stick to. But coming across someone from HB who obviously stands out and does so with his classic Stache is pretty cool.

Scotty pays homage to the olden days (circa 1920s) with his Stache. Not many guys are willing to stray too far from the basic Stache look but Scotty definitely pulls it off. And it's not easy to get this type of Stache perfected for admiration each day. He explained in quick detail how he does it and it seems like such a process that I only managed to remember something about comb, gel, curl, hold, dry, spray. And I could be wrong or mistaken about the process but in the end that's ok because it's his creation and who am I to tell others how to copy him. He's unique and that's sweet.
